Directly serving pianists, ages 14-22, the Foundation seeks emerging talent through its flagship program The New York Piano Competition, and helps aspirants achieve their personal and professional goals through mentoring, career guidance, artistic development, and performance opportunities throughout the year. Individuality and excellence are mainstays of the Foundation’s core objectives, focusing the young artist’s horizons toward the pursuit of a realistic and attainable career in music. The
Stecher and Horowitz Foundation, a non-profit organization, is
an outgrowth of The Stecher and Horowitz School of the Arts. The
school, founded in 1960, in Cedarhurst, New York, was Nassau County’s
leading conservatory of music until its transition in 1999. Melvin
Stecher and Norman Horowitz, Executive Directors of the Foundation
and Founders of the original school, have devoted a lifetime to
the education of young people. More than 15,000 students attended
the school during its thirty-nine year history. The Foundation
is now dedicated toward an expanded concept that serves and inspires
students nationwide. Stecher and Horowitz have served as educational consultants to the publishing firm of G. Schirmer. The Stecher and Horowitz Piano Library, published by G. Schirmer is part of the teaching repertoire used throughout the United States and abroad, as is the college text “Keyboard Strategies.” Messrs. Stecher and Horowitz are as passionate about their fourth career, The New York Piano Competition, and its programs for young artists. In developing the NYPC, they sought to promote their vision of the performer as educator to a new generation of young pianists on the national level. In all these endeavors, the virtuosity and versatility of Stecher and Horowitz have earned them an unrivaled reputation in the music world.
